This case study explores the successful collaboration between Canopy Education and Save School Malaysia, a UNHCR refugee learning centre. It showcases how Canopy's Workspace Skills platform empowered Save School's students with essential digital literacy tools, laying the foundation for a brighter future.
Save School Malaysia: Education for a Brighter Future
Founded in 2017, Save School Malaysia began its journey in a small apartment, aiming to equip refugee students with crucial skills and language proficiency. Since then, the school has witnessed remarkable growth, expanding to two floors in a dedicated building. Currently, it caters to over 220 students, ranging from kindergarten to IGCSE, fostering future leaders irrespective of their background.
Save School's approach emphasises education as a building block for a better future. Their evolving programmes encompass adult literacy outreach, fostering parental integration, and a recently launched student-led translation programme for newcomers. IGCSE coordinator and science teacher Awadh Mohamed, who has been with the organisation since 2019, embodies this philosophy. Recognising the growing importance of digital skills, the school's administration, including Mohamed, actively seeks solutions to equip its students with the necessary tools.
Collaboration with Charterhouse Malaysia
Educational institution Charterhouse Malaysia partnered with Save School to support their technological infrastructure and learning management system development. Additionally, they facilitated community integration through various events and collaborations. Mohamed has been working closely with Gideon Williams, the Head of Digital Learning at Charterhouse Malaysia, to bridge the gap and ensure Save School students have the resources they need.
Canopy’s Google Workspace Skills
Workspace Skills is a series of interactive tutorials that helps students and teachers make the most of Google Workspace for Education. Using Workspace Skills interactive tutorials helps students become competent, efficient, and confident using
Google Workspace, and gain valuable transferable skills.
Canopy & Save School: A Partnership for Digital Skills
The partnership between Canopy and Save School began in January 2024, facilitated by Williams from Charterhouse Malaysia, a previous user and advocate of Canopy's Workspace Skills platform. Recognising the programme's potential, Williams envisioned Canopy equipping Save School students with valuable transferable skills. Canopy launched Workspace Skills with a pilot group of seven IGCSE students. The results were impressive, with students earning over 100 badges within days. The programme provided an engaging learning experience, allowing students to apply their newfound knowledge beyond the virtual classroom.
"I want to help to increase education globally. Access to education means a brighter future." - Awadh-Mohamed, IGCSE Coordinator
Looking Forward: Continued Growth and Impact
The partnership's success paves the way for further collaboration. Canopy plans to expand Workspace Skills to the next IGCSE batch and eventually encompass the school's 15 teachers. As a Community Interest Company, Canopy remains committed to its social mission of empowering education through digital transformation.
Conclusion
This case study demonstrates the positive impact of technology-driven education solutions. By equipping refugee students with essential digital literacy skills, Canopy and Save School empower them to navigate academic challenges and confidently step into the future. The partnership serves as an inspiring example of how collaboration
can bridge educational gaps and create a more inclusive learning environment.
